Ganpathy Murthy was born in India and got his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1982. He then attended graduate school at Yale where he obtained his PhD in 1987 under the supervision of Prof. Shankar. After a postdoctoral stint at the State University of Stony Brook, he went on to a faculty position at Boston University. Since 1999 he has been at the University of Kentucky. His interests are in condensed matter physics, specifically the quantum Hall effects in two-dimensional materials.
