Join WindWalkers for its first annual Reins for a Reason, a free, family-friendly Working Equitation benefit show and community ranch day, on Saturday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at WindWalkers, 1030 County Road 102, Carbondale.

The centerpiece of the day is a 13-obstacle Working Equitation-style course open to riders of all abilities, ages, and experience levels. In the Open Class, riders may compete at the walk, trot, or canter, independently or with a two- or three-person support team, with adaptive accommodations available throughout. For a bigger challenge, the timed Speed Round asks competitors to complete every obstacle for a recorded finish time.

Beyond the arena, Reins for a Reason doubles as a regional gathering for the equine-assisted services (EAS) community, with organizations from across the Roaring Fork and Colorado River valleys — from Aspen to Grand Junction — setting up informational booths. Food will be available for purchase from Bottoms Up Farm, and trailer parking is available on-site.

Admission is free and open to the public. Rider entry is $50 for the open class/speed round, or $25 for EAS program participants. All proceeds benefit the WindWalkers Rider Scholarship Fund.

Here’s your chance to meet our local authors! More than 25 western slope writers will be at the Glenwood Springs Library from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 25. Spend your Saturday evening with the sounds of bluegrass at El Dorado. Hosted by Mac Benning on the last Saturday of every month from 7–9 PM, this recurring jam session brings together a different mix of musicians each month for an authentic, spontaneous performance rooted in the traditions of bluegrass music. Based in Aspen, CO, Mark represents a modern take on the one-man band. Drawing on his previous roles as vocalist / guitarist for both Hurricane Carter and Opera House Arson, his solo material is rootsy, spans multiple genres, and deeply explores looping multiple parts live. Lesser-known covers accentuate his original material in an eclectic, engaging set. Between appearances at local landmarks like Belly Up and TACAW, he's also shared the stage with artists such as Lukas Nelson, Gov’t Mule, Perpetual Groove, Greyhounds, Hayes Carll, Adrian Belew, Devon Allman, South of France, and ALO.
