El Placer de Leer is a Spanish-language reading program designed to cultivate a love for literature by Hispanic and Latin American authors. Through reading and discussing selected texts, participants explore the richness of writers who have shaped literature in Spanish.
This is not a Spanish language class but rather a space for literary conversation and analysis, where participants are expected to have a high level of reading comprehension and conversational fluency in Spanish. The program coordinator suggests the readings, selecting works that spark interest and discussion, from classics to contemporary authors.
Sessions provide a friendly and enriching environment where each reader contributes their perspective and enjoys the diversity of interpretations that a good book can inspire.

As part of our Summer Reading Program for adults, join us for a Book Talk on Silvia Moreno-Garcia's novel, Mexican Gothic. After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemi Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She's not sure what she will find--her cousin's husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemi knows little about the region. Noemi is also an unlikely rescuer: She's a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she's also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid. As she faces a sinister family, strange visions, and dark secrets, she begins to unravel the disturbing past of High Place and its inhabitants. Over appetizers and drinks, we will discuss themes, questions, and what resonated with you during a discussion facilitated by Mary Fox and Elizabeth de Wetter. A limited number of free copies will be available.
