"The Way is Not a Way But a Place" by Chloe Wildwerding
This is a solo exhibition by mixed media artist Chloe Wilwerding blends photography, embroidery, and quilting into textile portraits of place. Through references to merit badges and outdoor gear, the show proposes a shift from achievement in nature towards wonder, intimacy, and attention to the landscape.

GEOart Collective: Cracks, Layers, Water
The GEOart Collective is an international consortium of artists who share a love and fascination of nature and the geosciences. Each artist in our group brings a unique set of skills in the world of textile and mixed media. Many of us create our own fabrics, threads and papers through the use of dye, paint and print. Artists in the GEOart Collective have exhibited their work locally, nationally and internationally.

Join us for the opening reception Thursday (yes, Thursday), July 9, from 5:00-7:00pm with an artist talk beginning at 5:30pm. Thank you to Wilderness Workshop for generously sponsoring these exhibitions and for your meaningful work in protecting wilderness, water, and wildlife in Western Colorado!

Through our partnership with the Aspen Music Festival and School, we welcome talented students from the festival to perform the repertoire they’ve come to Aspen to refine this summer. This intimate concert offers a rare opportunity to experience these musicians up close and engage with them in a post-concert conversation about their lives and artistry. Performance information will be announced on the day of the concert.

For the past two decades, Austin’s The Band of Heathens have been ahead of the curve. Whether that’s through incisive lyrics or a sound they crafted that’s become mainstream, the group of troubadours has been steadfast in their truth. On the band’s upcoming album, titled Country Sides, The Band of Heathens takes a look back at their career with gratitude and great satisfaction.

Formed in 2005, the Heathens broke into the public consciousness in 2009 with their heartfelt blend of country and rock, including memorable performances at Austin City Limits on PBS and the Austin City Limits Festival. Since then, members have come and gone, but principal songwriters Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist give the band its collective focus and provide the DNA to the songs beloved by folks around the globe.

For a band that’s accomplished so much and on their own terms, the approach for this album was natural and felt right. The themes addressed on this album, such as the reflective, contemplative nature of the lyrical matter, led to questions like “What’s next?” As always, The Band of Heathens is debating what that future looks like. It certainly includes more music and touring. But, in what fashion? Not even they know. That said, their music continues to live on. Look no further than the success of 2011’s “Hurricane. Nearly 15 years later, the song went gold and has since been certified platinum, showcasing the band’s resonant sound. And, at this point in their career, they’re perfectly content with what they’re doing.

This summer, Thursdays a la cART invites families and adults alike to create together through hands-on creativity in the Learning Lab and galleries of the Powers Art Center. Inspired by the bold works of Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein, discover, make, and get inspired!

This week of Plants and Potions is taught in collaboration with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES). Each day, campers will spend the morning with ACES educators exploring hands-on activities aligned with the camp’s theme. In the afternoon, TAB educators will guide creative art projects that build on and connect to the concepts introduced earlier in the day. These collaboration camps are perfect for children that love spending time in nature and making art!

Step into a world of wonder where nature is your laboratory! During Plants & Potions, campers will dive into hands-on adventures that blend plant science with a touch of whimsy and wizardry. Campers will build their skills in plant identification, brew sun teas, paint with plants, and experiment with reaction potions. Leave this week with a better understanding of the hidden benefits and uses of plants that makes them magical.

Build, Invent, and Imagine! You’ll design and construct buildings, vehicles, machines, butterflies, ladybugs—anything you can dream up. Using cardboard, recycled materials, simple tools, tape, glue, and lots of creative problem-solving, you’ll plan, prototype, and bring big ideas to life, then paint, customize, and add details to make each project uniquely your own.

An engaging time where you and your child are invited to listen to stories, participate in large motor movement, experience sensory activities, and be able to interact with other children and caregivers. This is geared to children 0-3 years old.
