Nonprofit Spotlight

  • Advocates of Lake County is a nonprofit violence prevention agency serving those at risk of abuse and homelessness. Bridge Leadville is the arm of Advocates that aids people experiencing homelessness. That program recently lost nearly a million dollars due to federal cuts. Co-Executive Director and Operations Director Kristen King joined Mike Lemmer in the studio to discuss creative fundraising, volunteer work, and the crucial assistance that Advocates of Lake County provides.
  • BookCliffs Art Center, located in Rifle, is a community gathering place to learn about and appreciate art in its various media. They offer community gardening, sensory art, a gallery for local creatives, and, much like KDNK, are funded by donations. BookCliff's Brenda Cox visited Mike Lemmer at KDNK to spread the word on downvalley arts.
  • Carbondale is home to The Meeting Place, a location devoted exclusively to recovery from all kinds of addictions through all manner of approaches. Currently the cozy basement hosts 30 meetings per week. Karlynn Fulmer manages the space, the schedule and the funding from grants, special events and donations from the groups using the space. She joined Mike Lemmer in the KDNK studio for our focus on nonprofits.
  • Smiling Goat Ranch provides a unique therapeutic experience for clients in the Roaring Fork Valley with neuropsychiatric conditions such as autism, PTSD, and much more. Founder Sheryl Barto visited KDNK's Mike Lemmer in early March to educate our listeners on the science behind the ranch.
  • Mountain Action Indivisible is the Roaring Fork Valley's chapter of the national pro-democracy organization Indivisible. Local organizers Debbie Bruell and Lori Brandon visited KDNK to talk about meaningful organizing and making a difference in government.

  • On Saturday night Thunder River Theatre on Carbondale’s Main Street lit up with psychedelic visuals to welcome headliner, The Magic Beans, to ongoing concert series Pink to Black. Pink to Black started last year between the theatre and local bar El Dorado.
  • Recovery Resources operates the only homeless shelter in the Roaring Fork Valley; River Bridge in Glenwood supports interventions with abused children; Mountain Valley Developmental Services gives meaning and community to the region’s developmentally disabled. Valley Voices learns more about all three, with host Marilyn Gleason.
